York Academy utilizes Smart Futures as its comprehensive Career Education and Work (CEW) platform to support students in developing the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary for future success. Beginning in kindergarten and continuing through grade 12, all students are expected to complete age-appropriate Smart Futures modules that align with Pennsylvania’s Academic Standards for Career Education and Work. This intentional K–12 progression ensures that students continuously explore career opportunities, develop career readiness skills, and create meaningful plans for their futures.
Pennsylvania is the first state in the nation to require all students to graduate with a personalized career plan and portfolio. Smart Futures enables York Academy to meet these state requirements while providing students with engaging, individualized career exploration experiences. Through the platform, students complete activities that help them better understand their interests, strengths, personality traits, and career aspirations. These experiences guide students as they connect their academic learning to future career pathways and postsecondary opportunities.
A key feature of Smart Futures is the development of a digital Career Portfolio. Throughout their educational journey, students collect and archive evidence of their learning, including career assessments, goal-setting activities, career research, reflections, and plans for postsecondary education or workforce entry. This portfolio grows with students from elementary school through graduation, providing a comprehensive record of their career development and readiness.
Smart Futures also incorporates Future Ready Badges, which allow students to demonstrate achievement in career education and workplace competencies. As students complete required activities and milestones, they earn badges that showcase their progress and mastery of critical skills. These badges provide tangible evidence of student engagement in career readiness and support the development of a strong career portfolio.
At York Academy, Smart Futures serves as a structured framework that helps students answer three essential questions: Who am I? Where am I going? And how will I get there? Students explore their interests and strengths, investigate career options, and identify the educational pathways (including college, technical training, apprenticeships, military service, and direct workforce entry) that will help them achieve their goals.
Beyond supporting student growth, Smart Futures assists York Academy in maintaining state and federal compliance. The platform automatically tracks student progress, stores required artifacts, and generates reports aligned with Pennsylvania accountability measures, including the Future Ready PA Index. By implementing Smart Futures across all grade levels, York Academy ensures that students graduate with a well-developed career portfolio, a personalized career plan, and the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-changing workforce.
