Mental Health Support Services

York Academy K–12 Social-Emotional & Mental Health Support Services

York Academy is committed to supporting the whole child by providing comprehensive social-emotional and mental health services for students in grades K–12. These supports are delivered by school counselors, a licensed social worker, and community partners to ensure every student has access to the care they need to succeed academically and personally.

School-Based Counseling & Support

School Counselors: Icey Cunningham, Maia D’Angelo, Kimberly Bonderowitz, Omid Farahani

  • Individual counseling sessions to support students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs
  • Small group counseling focused on topics such as anxiety, depression, peer relationships, and coping skills
  • Daily and weekly check-ins with counselors to monitor student well-being
  • Collaboration with teachers, families, and administrators to support student success
  • School counselors oversee both counseling services and Student Assistance Program (SAP) processes

Student Assistance Program (SAP)

Facilitated by School Counselors

  • Referral-based support system for students experiencing barriers to learning
  • Confidential, team-based process to address academic, behavioral, or emotional concerns
  • Development of individualized intervention plans in collaboration with families
  • Ongoing follow-up and progress monitoring after referral

School Social Work Services

Licensed Social Worker: Nicole Miller (K–12)

  • Provides additional support for students facing social, emotional, or environmental challenges
  • Assists with attendance concerns, family stressors, and mental health needs
  • Coordinates support between school, home, and external providers

SAIP (Student Attendance Improvement Plan)

Coordinator: Ms. Jody Jones (K–12)

  • Oversees SAIP meetings for students with significant attendance and tardiness concerns
  • Works with students and families to identify barriers to attendance
  • Develops and monitors plans to improve student attendance and engagement

Community Mental Health Partnerships

  • Partnership with WellSpan Health to support student wellness and access to care
  • Collaboration with WellSpan Philhaven for:
    • Individual therapy
    • Group therapy
    • Family-based services
    • Crisis intervention and higher levels of care when needed

External Therapy & Referral Services

  • Support connecting students and families with outside counseling and therapy providers
  • Assistance navigating referrals for:
    • Outpatient therapy
    • Behavioral health services
    • Specialized mental health care
  • Coordination with outside providers to ensure continuity of care

Crisis & Immediate Support

  • Access to crisis intervention services through community partners when students are in urgent need
  • Coordination with local agencies to ensure student safety and stabilization
  • Connection to 24/7 crisis support resources through trusted providers

McKinney-Vento Homeless Support Services

Coordinator: Icey Cunningham (Lower School Counselor)

  • Support for students and families experiencing homelessness or housing instability under the McKinney-Vento Act
  • Assistance with:
    • School stability and enrollment
    • Transportation needs
    • Access to food, clothing, and school supplies
  • Connection to community-based supports for housing and basic needs
  • Advocacy to ensure equitable access to education and services
