Shaping Tomorrow: Career & IB Education at York Academy
At York Academy, preparing students for the future goes far beyond traditional academics and test scores. We believe every child should graduate with the confidence, practical skills, and a global mindset needed to build a fulfilling life. By blending Pennsylvania's Academic Standards for Career Education and Work (CEW) with our International Baccalaureate (IB) Core Values and Learner Profile, we help students discover who they are, explore what they love, and map out a purposeful path forward.
Ready from Day One: College and career readiness doesn't start in senior year; it begins the moment a student enters York Academy. We are committed to helping students explore what they want to study and who they want to become long before 12th grade, giving them time to reflect, pivot, and plan without feeling rushed.
Grounded in the IB Learner Profile
Our approach to career and life planning directly reflects the core attributes we cultivate in our IB students every day:
- Inquirers & Thinkers: Students actively research diverse industries, ask meaningful questions about different fields, and analyze modern workforce trends.
- Refelective & Knowledgeable: Through early career surveys and on-going self-assessments, students learn to connect their personal strengths and passions to real-world opportunities.
- Open-Minded & Communicators: Whether engaging with visiting college reps or networking during employer visits, students practice listening, engaging, and sharing their goals with confidence.
- Risk-Takers (Courageous) & Balanced: We encourage students to step outside their comfort zones to explore trades, technical paths, four-year degrees, and apprenticeships to build a well-rounded vision for their future.
How We Bring Career & Life Preparation to Life
1. Early Discovery & Digital Tools
In early high school, students take formal career interest inventories to help narrow down pathways that align with their personalities and talents. Using interactive online platforms like SmartFutures, CareerOneStop, and O*NET, students analyze their assessment results, explore salary data, and track potential career fields.
2. Bringing HIgher Education to Campus
We bring post-secondary opportunities directly to our students. Every year, we host over 40 colleges and universities across the United States on campus during lunch hours. These information sessions give students direct access to admissions counselors to ask about academic programs, campus life, sports, internships, co-ops, and extracurricular opportunities.
3. Experiential Learning: Campus & Industry Field Trips
Learning happens both inside and outside the classroom. Throughout the school year, we take students on:
- College Campus Visits: Exploring dynamic university environments firsthand to help students picture themselves in higher education.
- Local Employer Field Trips: Visiting businesses and industries right here in York, PA. During these site visits, students discover local career opportunities and learn directly from professionals about high-demand trades, vocational careers, and paid apprenticeship programs.
4. Essential Employability & Future Planning
Knowledge gets you in the door, but strong personal habits build long-term success. We emphasize problem-solving, workplace ethics, resume building, and interview preparation. By the time students reach their final years at York Academy, their personal career portfolios reflect years of intentional exploration, clear goal-setting, and self-discovery.
What This Means for Your Family
As a partner in your child's education, you’ll see these standards and IB values reflected in school projects, family night events, and daily learning. Our goal isn't to force students to lock in a career too early—it’s to give them a wide-open lens, real-world experiences, and a supportive environment so they can step into the future with clarity and confidence.
