York Academy Academic Advising Timeline (Grades 9–11)

All meetings listed below are conducted in a one-on-one setting to provide personalized guidance and support:

Grade 9 (Freshman Year) – Spring Semester

Advisors: Mr. Omid Farahani (“Mr. O”) & Ms. Shreckengast (IB MYP Coordinator)

  • Review current academic performance (strengths and areas for improvement)
  • Discuss strategies for academic success and getting back on track if needed
  • Plan and select courses for sophomore year
  • Explore student interests, future goals, and potential career aspirations
  • Discuss elective options for Grade 10 

Grade 10 (Sophomore Year)

Semester 2 – College & Career Exploration

Advisor: Mr. O

  • Explore postsecondary pathways:
    • 2-year colleges
    • 4-year colleges/universities
    • Trade/vocational programs
    • Military options
    • Direct entry into the workforce
  • Begin aligning interests with potential career paths

Spring – IB Diploma Programme (DP) Planning

Advisor: Mrs. Riggs (IB DP Coordinator)

  • Overview of IB Diploma Programme options:
    • Full DP
    • Partial DP
    • Non-testing pathway
  • Select potential Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) IB courses for Grades 11–12
  • Review graduation requirements, including:
    • Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
    • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
    • Extended Essay (EE)
    • Community service expectations

Grade 11 (Junior Year) – Full Year (Semesters 1 & 2)

 Advisor:  Mr. O

  • Refine college and career goals
  • Complete career and interest surveys to guide postsecondary planning
  • Discuss application pathways and next steps for senior year
  • Explore all postsecondary options, including:
    • College/university
    • Military
    • Workforce entry
  • Ensure alignment between academic choices and future goals
